- it was terrible, cold, wet, so hungry we could eat each other. the indians killed so many men. the indians out numbered us by a lot and they were sneaky, so quick and quite we couldn't catch them. We burried so much bodys. everyone didn't work so we couldn't make any materials to survive. some of us resolved to eating each other, we would dig up dead peoples bodies and eat there deceased body. we were starving.
- But then captain john smith came along and forced settlers to work. we were able to build a fort to provide shelter from the indians. Luckily the powhatan people provided food for us. But then smith got injured and returned to england. the powhatan people stopped providing food, we called the winter of 1609-1610 the starving time.
- We luckily survived the starving time. They sent more colonist to replace those who have died. We also have found a way to make money for all the colonists. We started growing a type of tabbaco using seeds from the west indies.
- The colonist began to expand. Our relationship began to expand with the powhatan people when a colonist, john rolfe, married the cheifs daughter pocahontas. they started sending women to jamestown. as a result marrige and children became a part of life.
- We started giving headrights to people who paid there way into the colony. This helped the colony succeed. the chance to have land lured many settlers to the colony. It also game them a reason to work hard. They also started giving colonists to take part into their own gorvernment. This was all part of the virginia company. The virgina company was a joint-stock company in which investors bought shares, or part ownership.
- The virginia colony was growing in size, but it was not making any money for the shareholders of the virginia company. In fact, the company faced financial troubles. In 1624 king james took away the company's charter. Virginia became a royal colony, meaning it was direclty under the control of the government in England.
