- Hatred is contagious Once one person starts to talk bad about someone, it creates a snowball effect and soon everyone has something to say. Sometimes people just be mean to fit in, or sometimes people are just rude. But regardless people will just follow along and be mean, even if they don't want to.

- "Maya, don't even think about going to prom with Phil"(Ahmed 140)
- When Brian verbally attacks Maya, it is the first of many racists acts. He confronts her in front of the entire school. This develops the theme because people start to agree with him, and because of his actions, Maya is scared of what other people will do.
- Thematic Solution
- He confessed - to everything" (Ahmed 234).
- This develops the theme because instead of Brian harassing Maya, now his friends are involved too. Since Brian has done this before and not gotten in trouble, his friends think it is okay. Brian's actions have caused a domino affect of hatred, and that is why hatred is contagious.
- Amber and Kelsey's rudeness stems from Lisa's hatred towards Maya. This is why the felt the need to intimidate her. This is an example of friends blindly following other friends and getting the "hatred virus". Although this is different from the other examples, it still accurately depicts the theme because it shows how an innocent Maya gets hurt by people who don't have any real reason to hate her.
- In the end Brian was caught and Maya was finally able to feel peace. Maya and other people that are a part of her culture felt relived, but they know that it is only a matter of time before another big thing like this happens again. Maya hopes that this entire thing doesn't affect her plans to go to NYU.
