- a district outside a city, especially a prosperous area beyond the suburbs. An example is people living on the outskirts of Philadelphia.
- Gated Community
- Regarding places or things settled far from the influence of an urban area. An example of a rural concept is a family owned sustenance farm far from a city
- An area of land maintained as parks or other open centers used in order to counter urban sprawl. An example would be a forest on the outside of a city that acts as a park.
- A community surrounded by a gate where only the residents of the community can enter, increasing security and a sense of place. This is a modern form of residential housing.
