Hi! I’m Frederick Banting, the inventor of insulin. I am from Alliston, Ontario, Canada. I graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1916, and I served in the First World War, did a post-graduate degree in surgery and started a medical practice in London. Welcome to the story of my invention!
TASK 3. PROJECT: "Great serendipities of our history"INSULINFrederick Banting
I remember that I was in the same place as always, Toronto on december 12, 1921, we had been locked up for months experimenting.
Together with my student Charles Best, we discovered that an extract of the pancreas content had the ability to regulate glucose in animal blood.
And we performed animal tests, such as with a diabetic dog, the extract lowered his blood glucose level in two hours!
So after I, James Collip, joined the investigation, we purified the contents of the pancreas.
Hi, my name is Leonard Thompson and I was 14 years old when I became the first person in the world to receive an injection of insulin.
I was there! And in just 24 hours, Leonard’s dangerously high blood sugar levels subside.
Even after my death in 1941, research continued and in 1978 a "human insulin" manufactured synthetically using recombinant DNA technology was discovered.
It’s important because it helps to treat diabetes, regulate the metabolism and some processes of the human.
THE IMPORTANCE OF INSULIN
If you don't have diabetes: the insulin helps to regulate the blood sugar levels and store excess glucose for energy. If you have diabetes: Insulin therapy helps prevent diabetes complications by keeping your blood sugar level within a target range.
