A central business district is the focal point of a city. It is the center of commerce, retail, office, and culture within a city. This area is highly desirable, and therefore expensive to live in. The CBD is also referred to as the downtown area. An example of a CBD is The Chicago Loop, in Chicago.
Greenbelt
An edge city is a concentration of business, shopping and entertainment that exists outside of a traditional downtown area or central business district. This area usually exists where a suburb originally was. An example of an edge city is La Défense, which is a business district 3 miles west of the city limits of France.
New Urbanism
A suburb is an area outside of a principal city area. A suburb can be multi-purpose, but is primarily used as a residential area. This area can be considered part of the more urban city, or a separate entity
Rural
So secluded...
A greenbelt is a section of land reserved for park, agriculture, or other types of open space. These areas are protected from development of urban design and are mostly left undeveloped. An example of a greenbelt is Central Park in New York City
New Urbanism is a city planning and developing with the goal of making the urban area more friendly toward residents. This usually includes walkable neighborhoods along with commerce and retail in close proximity. This is all done in the hopes that people will move into the urban area instead of the suburbs. An example of New Urbanist design is Harbor Town in Memphis, Tennessee
Rural areas, or countryside, are the areas outside of towns or cities. These areas have low population density and small communities that are spread among a large area. These areas can be dedicated to agriculture or forestry. Most of the Great Plains of the Midwestern US is considered rural.
