  • Examples of subjectivity statements:As a faculty member in a health professions setting, I bring firsthand experience with academic hierarchies, team dynamics, and the often ambiguous expectations placed on faculty in supervisory roles. My interest in this topic stems from both witnessing and experiencing gaps in leadership preparation among peers. I recognize that my own views on what effective supervision looks like are shaped by my background in higher education administration and my training in interpersonal communication. I also acknowledge that my position as an insider in this setting may affect how participants relate to me and how I interpret their narratives. Throughout this study, I commit to remaining reflexive. I will question my assumptions, attending to multiple perspectives, and seeking to understand participants’ experiences on their own terms.

  • An example for my research purposes:As a human resource professional at UNC at Chapel Hill in the School of Medicine, my perspective is shaped by my background in employee relations, training and development, compliance, and federal and State laws. My interest in this topic emerged from witnessing the lack in confidence in supervisors in managing their employees, turnover, and disproportionate number of employee relations cases. I bring to this research a lens informed by education, certifications, and years of experience, which influences how I perceive issues of communication, conflict resolution, management styles, and employee relations. I am aware that my role in HR may influence how participants respond to me due to perceptions of authority, confidentiality, and institutional alignment. I aim to remain reflexive by documentation and peer debriefing, and I strive to understand each participants experiences as they describe them, rather than through and administrative lens. My goal is to contribute to a deeper understanding of faculty leadership and support structure through an open and respectful inquiry process.
