  • While some civilizations had bigger progress in technological and religious aspects of their lives, the Haudenosaunee pursued a more balanced social and political system. By creating their own form of constitution and being guided by the Great Law of Peace, they jointly governed their people to make sure the power between every tribe was balanced.
  • The Aztecs built massive structures and constantly improved their technology, however, hey also had more aggressive means of ruling conquered tribes often using them as human sacrifices. The fall of the Aztecs is tied to their bad relationships with other tribes. The relationship between the Aztecs and other tribes was contentious, which became their evident weakness when Cortez arrived, so despite the technological power they held, the Aztecs doomed themselves by treating their subjects poorly.
  • The Lenni Lenape were very skilled in fishing and agriculture, but they did not improve their connections which lead to their downfall. The Lenni Lenape had three primary divisions called Munsee, Unami, and Unalactigo, but in spite of that, they never formed an alliance. Although food and provisions are important, having a defined social and political system would benefit their people. In the case of the Lenni Lenapes, without a system of politics, they were not able to achieve greater advancements.
  • There is a pattern among all of the Native Americans despite their locations. Like many other civilizations in North America, the Pueblos also had an under-established social and political reform. With a more unified tribe, they could have fended off the Navajo and Apache Indians. For example in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, the indigenous Pueblo people temporarily worked together to take back their homes. If they had a permanent bond like the Haudenosaunee, they could have governed their own people.
  • The Haudenosaunee were able to achieve a balanced society centuries before the European countries. They balanced work and everyday activities becoming more productive than if they worked separately. The process of electing a clan mother and chief prevented corruption in the tribe and balanced out the power. The Chiefs would gather together to solve a problem as one community often helping each other overcome problems. Food, culture, and ideas blended together also proving how their confederate system of ruling benefitted their power, culture, and social life.
  • What most impresses me about the Haudenosaunee is that they were able to form a confederacy while Europeans were going through the Renaissance. Their confederacy inspired the settlers and actually became the foundation for the first American government. This proves that the Haudenosaunee were actually more advanced in certain regions than the Europeans and were ahead of their time when it came to social and political ideas.
