- Pope: all of the Roman Catholic Church must follow all rules of the church.
- Pope: I will do whatever I need to, to get the most power!
- Kings: You'll never get the most power! 😠
- John Hus: Unacceptable! You should not be selling indulgences!
- In the 1500s, the Roman Catholic Church was super powerful and controlled what their followers, or protestants, could do. The church owned approximately 1/3 of the land in Europe.
- Martin Luther: ...95 Thesis...
- The pope competed with the kings for power and would excommunicate them if they went against the popes commands.
- The Roman Catholic Church sold indulgences. John Hus very much disagreed with the sale of indulgences.
- Martin Luther wrote "95 Thesis" which was 95 arguments against indulgences.
- In 1522, Luther traveled to Wittenberg Castle Church and began to organize a new branch of Christianity that became known as Lutheranism.
