Demander aux élèves de choisir une citation ou une scène préférée du livre permet aux élèves d'établir une connexion texte-à-soi qui démontre leur compréhension des personnages et de leur développement ou des thèmes du roman. Les élèves peuvent ensuite partager leurs storyboards et avoir une courte discussion sur ce que les citations signifient pour eux.

- "You can't keep the birds of sadness from flying over your head, but you can keep them from nesting in your hair" is one of the mysterious notes left on Phoebe Winterbottom's porch. Sal has grieved for her mother since she left many months ago. Her father believes that the road trip with her grandparents on the route Sal's mother traveled will help her come to a sense of closure and acceptance. Sal realizes that the note for Phoebe can apply to her own life and her need to continue living and finding happiness.
