  • Dia: 1
  • Greetings from the future, citizen!I've come to teach you the power of logarithms!
  • Dia: 2
  • Thanks to logarithms, we can use them to control data and information. Exponential growth is everywhere - from populations to technology!
  • So, what does that mean for us?
  • Dia: 3
  • PUSH
  • Woah, I see now! Well, wait. What does this button?
  • When things grow exponentially, they can get out of hand fast!
  • Press it and you'll see!
  • Dia: 4
  • 'Logarithms: Taming the Growth'
  • OH! I think I get it! But how is this helpful in the real world?
  • f(x) = log2(x+1)
  • PUSH
  • We look at earthquakes, the Richter Scale uses logarithms to measure the energy released by the earthquake, providing a compact way to represent a range of earthquake intensities.
  • Dia: 5
  • 1 = 2log4(x-3)
  • Why don't you try solving a logarithm to this equation. It's easier to understand when you use the right scale!
  • I'm not sure...logarithms sound tricky.
  • Dia: 6
  • Magnitude (kg)
  • 1 = 2log4(x-3)1/2 = log4(x-3)1/2 = log 4(x-3)4^(1/2) = 4^log4(x-3)2 = x - 35 = x
  • The Richter Scale
  • 9 (20 trillion)8 (60 billion)7 (20 billion)6 (60,000,000)5 (20,00,000)4 (60,000)3 (20,000)2 (600)1 (0.6-20)

  • Notice how the function changes! Exponential and logarithmic functions are inverses of each other!
  • Logarithms can be helpful even in the real world!
  • I get it! Since exponential and logarithmic functions are inverses of each other, I can exponentiate a logarithmic equation to then solve for x algebraically!
  • There sure is a lot of people in my class. Man, the population sure i.. Woah!
