- "He strayed away ... and wandered far down the steep slopes amid the wild tangle of undergrowth, peering through the tree trunks and listening through the whistling and skirling of the wind and the restless beating of the branches for sight and sound of the marauders" (263).

- “ ‘No,’ said Ulrich with a laugh, the idiotic chattering laugh of a man unstrung with hideous fear” (267). This statement makes us wonder what Ulrich sees that is making him so afraid creating suspense.
- The men finally become friends then die right away. Readers might expect the story to turn out with a happy resolution, but instead the result is grim and the feud will continue.

- The conflict of one man hunting to kill another is dark and spooky. The setting of a dark, cold night in the forest makes the story scary as well.
