Milgram (1963) had conducted an experiment to find out how’s obident normal people would be under the instruction of a figure in regard to harming another person.
RESULTS
You have no choice, you must continue!!!
We’re told to pick a role out from the hat to determine if they would be the learner or the teacher. This was rigged to ensure the confederate was always the learner. Participants then observed the learner being strapped into a chair Then the learner was given a real shock of 45V.
CONCLUSION
I was just following the orders of the experimenter!
The teacher was told to teach the learner a set of matching pairs and then test them. If a wrong answer was given, an electric shock would be given, starting at 15V up to 450V. Teachers believed that they were administring real shock. At 300V, the learner requested the experiment to be stopped but the teacher continued after the experimenter insisted they go on.
ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
All participants obeyed up to 300V and 14 out of 40 left the experiment before the final 450V shock. 26 administered the 450V after the learner had stopped responding and continued to do so until told to be stopped by the experminter
Milgram concluded that most ordinary people will follow instrutions, including killing another human being, when the orders come from an authority figure. He believed that this is nurtured from childhood.
The psychological effects ofthis study were immense. Many of the participants showed signs of extreme stress, such as sweating and nervous laughter. Milgram, who was observing from behinf the glass, came and questioned on the right to withdraw. The partiipant was then debriefed and told how the learner was actually not harmed.
