- The slow paced of the initial encounter tells us how the characters from the beginning are always aware of their next step. Rather than to brashly step in and begin the fight, Raymond and Meursalt, decide that they will strategize their assault. They are aware of the decisions that they might take and what the consequences may be. By the end of Meursalt's encounter, his actions become more impulsive and driven by his uncomfortable behavior. However, the discomfort he feels from the heat, does not deprive him of his freedom, and thus he had the free will to shoot the Arab, five times.
