The Poet X is een realistische fictieroman die in verzen is geschreven. Het gaat over de 15-jarige Xiomara Batista, een begaafde dichteres die met haar gezin in Harlem, NY woont. De roman is vanuit het oogpunt van Xiomara en leest als haar persoonlijke poëziedagboek waarin ze haar leven beschrijft, haar kijk op religie, het voortdurend geconfronteerd worden met seksisme, haar strikte Dominicaanse ouders, haar nieuwe verboden vriendje, en het navigeren door de wereld als een jonge vrouw van kleur proberen om haar stem te vinden.

- The Nuyorican Poet's Cafe is where Xiomara competes in the slam competition at the end of the novel. It is a real place in New York City, founded in 1973 by Puerto Rican poet Miguel Algarin. It has been a place for poets and artists of all races, cultures, and backgrounds to share their work ever since! Allen Ginsberg is quoted as saying the Cafe is "the most integrated place on the planet."
