Learner engagement in their learning experiences

Storyboard Tekst

  • Hi. I am Ann Apple and I teach a Year 2 class. I have a mixed-ability group made up of 17 learners. I have 9 foreign learners who still find it a bit difficult to communicate in Maltese. Two learners in my class are supported by a Learning Support Educator, however they follow the same curriculum.
  • Today's Maltese lesson was about writing sentences about a favourite animal. I started off the lesson by asking my learners what comes to their mind when they think about animals. I listened to a couple of comments from the learners – the ones who put their hands up – and then told them that we were going to write sentences about their favourite animal.
  • L-annimal favorit tiegħi
  • I asked the learners to draw their favourite animal. Then I asked them to write some words around the picture to use them in their sentences.
  • Ikteb test fattwali dwar annimal li jogħġbok
  • After the pre-writing activity, I asked the learners to start writing their sentences. Most of the learners needed help and I could not manage to assist each learner who was finding difficulties. When this happens, I usually end up giving them the sentences myself because they do not know what they are going to write or how to express themselves.
  • L-annimal favorit tiegħi
  • Next time I will make it a point to give the lower-ability learners a cloze exercise so that it would be easier for them to get on with the task without needing much of my help!
  • L-annimal favorit tiegħi
  • I concluded the lesson by telling them to finish off their sentences at home.
