  • “Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut is a dystopian satire depicting a take on equality and freedom. It is set in the year 2081 in an American society where everyone is equal. Vonneget uses satire to depict the absurdity of total equality and it can be a mistaken goal to achieve. Throughout the satire, he shows how characters have to use devices or means to limit their abilities so they are equal with others that might not be as gifted in certain ways. Vonnegut use of satire is a way to make the point that total equality is not what people want and is a dangerous goal. Another point he tries to make in the satire is the authoritarianism of the government to reach equality. The citizens are completely controlled by the government and amendments have been made to the Constitution to support the policy of equality. To maintain authority, the government must suppress people's physical and mental abilities. The satire creates a conversation point on how media and government influence and slowly distract from truth convincing people this is the way to live and have real equality.
