  • Before meeting Gatsby and Daisy, Nick sees Gatsby standing on his dock. He is staring and reaching for the green light at the end of Daisy's dock. Gatsby is in love with Daisy. The green light symbolizes money, success, love, and the past. In this scene it represents love, desire, and relationships.

  • Money/Wealth: Chapter 9
  • Nick is disturbed by Tom and Daisy’s behavior. In the novel, they “crushed” Gatsby’s heart, car, and life. They also impacted Nick’s innocence and killed Myrtle Wilson. This scene represents money and wealth.
  • Death and Failure: Cahpter 7
  • While traveling with Cody, Gatsby fell in love with wealth and luxury. When Cody died, he left money. Gatsby couldn’t inherit the money because Cody’s mistress wouldn’t permit it. From then on, he decided he would become a wealthy and successful man. This scene represents society and class because Gatsby was about to inherit wealth, but had to work hard to create that lifestyle for himself.

  • Nick and Gatsby are driving to New York City for lunch.Gastby told Nick a story about his life as a wealthy person. Nick has a hard time believing his story. Nick implies that without having a verified connection to a family that’s wealthy, becoming successful is only possible in the United States. This scene represents The American Dream.
  • The American Dream: Chapter 4
  • At the party, Mrtyle’s sister Catherine talks to Nick about Myrtle and Tom’s affair. Myrtle believes that Tom isn’t giving Daisy a divorce because she is Catholic. But we learn that Tom’s feelings for Mrytle aren’t intense. The social pressure and upper-class background prevents him from leaving Daisy. This scene represents morality and ethics because Tom and Myrtle are having an affair.
  • Morality and Ethics: Chapter 2
  • Daisy killed Myrtle and Gatsby decides to take the blame for the murder. Gatsby is so in love with Daisy that he is willing to do anything for her. He lets her get away with murder. This scene represents death and failure because Daisy murdered Myrtle.
