  • WHAT MAKES THE CLIMATE WORK
  • WHAT MAKES THE CLIMATE WORK
  • Today we are going to learn about how the climate is made
  • The 3 components to the Climate
  • Sunlight
  • By Georgie Allan, Emma Laird and Amy Wilson
  • Atmosphere
  • "There are 3 things that make the climate; the sun, the water currents and the atmosphere."
  • Water Currents
  • The Sun powers life on Earth; it helps keep the planet warm enough for us to survive. It also influences Earth's climate: We know subtle changes in Earth's orbit around the Sun are responsible for the comings and goings of the past ice ages.

  • WHAT MAKES THE CLIMATE WORK
  • Can anyone remember what the 3 components are to the climate?
  • The atmosphere is a thin layer of gases that surrounds the Earth. It seals the planet and protects us from the vacuum of space. It protects us from electromagnetic radiation given off by the Sun and small objects flying through space such as meteoroids.
  • Ocean currents act much like a conveyor belt, transporting warm water and precipitation from the equator toward the poles and cold water from the poles back to the tropics. Thus, ocean currents regulate global climate, helping to counteract the uneven distribution of solar radiation reaching Earth's surface.
  • Ocean currents act as conveyer belts of warm and cold water, sending heat toward the polar regions and helping tropical areas cool off, thus influencing both weather and climate. Land areas also absorb some sunlight, and the atmosphere helps to retain heat that would otherwise quickly radiate into space after sunset.
