  • Meet Mama
  • Mama is one of the main characters in A Raisin In the Sun.  She is the mother to Walter Lee and Beneatha. She lives in a well lived apartment with her grown children and daughter in-law, Ruth, and her son, Travis.
  • My children and they tempers. Lord, if this little old plant don’t get more sun than it’s been getting it ain’t never going to see spring again.
  •   Walter Lee both want to use the check that is coming for Mama for his own dreams. His wife, Ruth, tries to tell him that it is his mother's money, not his.  Mama is receiving the check of $10,000 because of her husbands passing.
  • Fighting Over Someone Else's Money
  • Yeah. You see, this little liquor store we got in mind cost seventy-five thousand and we figured the initial investment on the place be ’bout thirty thousand, see...
  • Beneatha and Walter Lee, her brother, are fighting. Beneatha wants to become a doctor, but he doesn't think she should.
  •  Dream Big
  • Well—I do—all right?— thank everybody! And forgive me for ever wanting to be anything at all! FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME!
  • Mama tells Ruth wants her dreams and hopes are for the check and for her children. Ruth is understanding of Mama and considerate, but thinks that she should use the money to travel somewhere or do something for herself.
  • Mama Has A Dream, Too
  • I ain’t rightly decided.  Some of it got to be put away for Beneatha and her schoolin’—and ain’t nothing going to touch that part of it. Nothing.  Been thinking that we maybe could meet the notes on a little old two- story somewhere, with a yard where Travis could play in the summertime, if we use part of the insurance for a down payment and everybody kind of pitch in. I could maybe take on a little day work again, few days a week
  • In this scene Mama and Ruth are questioning Beneatha for doing different things, like horseback riding and wanting to learn the guitar.
  • Experimenting, Or Not
  • I don’t flit! I—I experiment with different forms of expression—
  • Like riding a horse?
  • In this scene Mama meets Asaigi for the first time. Beneatha is happy to see him and is talking to him. He calls her Alaiyo, which she does not know the meaning of, until she tells him.
  • Meeting Asagai
  • No—really it is difficult ... (Thinking) It means ... it means One for Whom Bread—Food—Is Not Enough. (He looks at her) Is that all right?
