  • God, comfort and provide me. I trust in you.
  • Germany will have no option but to forfeit soon, the end of this war is near.
  • Things have changed but we have a real community. We aren't in danger.
  • Moishe the Beetle asked Elie why he prayed and Elie responded, "Why did I pray? Strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breath?" (4). Elie feels strong connection to his religion and is mature in his faith for a boy his age.
  • We are just watching everything be destroyed. I cannot believe this.
  • In Sighet, people were aware of the occuring war ans Nazi party but thought, "Germany would be defeated. It was only a matter of time, months or weeks, perhaps"(8). Elie and his family believed this, they were in no immediate danger and were not prepared for what was to come.
  • Why would God let people be so violent ans cruel?
  • Where are they taking us and why are we being transported like livestock?
  • The Nazi forces eventually reached Sighet and divided them into ghettos but according to Elie, "The barbed wire that encircled us like a wall did not fill us with real fear.In fact, we felt this was not a bad thing; we were entirely amongst ourselves" (11). The Weisel family felt a sense of unity in the ghettos and were not being harmed by the Nazis yet.
  • The trauma of deportation by the Nazis led some passengers to become deluded and, "Freed of normal constraints, some of the young let go of their inhibitions and, under cover of darkness, caressed on another, without any thought of others, alone in the world"(23). This quote is representative of these first two sections because it shows a theme of community. When Sighet experiences the unimaginable, they become vulnerable and experience this deportation as a community. As much as they can, they help each other by offering quiet and solemn comfort. This reinforces themes of community and kinship in times of hardship.
  • Deportations soon began and the Nazis showed what they were truly capable of, "The altar was shattered, the wall coverings shredded, the walls themselves bare. There were so many of us we could hardly breathe. The twenty-four hours we spent there were horrendous"(22). This was the beginning of what was to be seen by Elie and his people.
  • After a dehumanizing ride in a cattle car they had arrived at their destination, "In front of us, those flames. In the air, the smell of burning flesh. It must have been around midnight. We had arrived. In Birkenau"(28). This was the arrival of Elie and his family to Auschwitz, the most well known Nazi run concentration camp.
