  • In Front Of Oedipus Palace
  • Blessed are the children. Why are you crying?
  • King Oedipus, the children and I came to pray at the altar.
  • Creon Goes To Consult Apollo
  • Oedipus look Creon is coming.
  • Creon Returns With News From Apollo
  • Oedipus, the murders of King Laius need to be avenged and removed from the city.
  • Oedipus, the king of Thebes emerges from the palace to address the priest and a group of children who are feeling a lot of sorrow and grief because the city has been plagued with sickness, disease, and death.
  • Reason For The Plague
  • Oedipus sent Creon his brother-in-law to talk to Apollo at the temple about how to get rid of the plague. Oedipus, the priest, and the chorus (a group of old men from Thebes) are talking when the priest sees that Creon has returned. Oedipus is eager and hoping Creon has some good news to share.
  • The Prophecy Told
  • Creon tells Oedipus that he needs to find the murders of King Laius, who was the ruler (King) before him. The unavenged of his death is the reason for the plague. The Chorus suggests to Oedipus that he needs to consult with Teiresias, the old blind man who is a prophet because he can see what Apollo sees.
  • The Prophecy Fulfillment
  • Teiresias tells Oedipus he is the reason for the plague and Oedipus accuses Teiresias and Creon of plotting against him to overtake his throne. Teiresias tells Oedipus that the killer is in Thebes and will become blind and will turn out to be both the son and husband of his mother. The men argue until Jocasta, Oedipus's wife steps in.
  • Oedipus, some thing are better unspoken,
  • Creon is this some kind of scheme to overtake my throne?
  • No! Please don't argue!
  • Jocasta tells Oepidus about a prophecy that a son of hers with Laius would kill his father so they had a shepherd take him to the wilderness to be killed to avoid the prophecy but instead the shepherd gave the baby boy to a slave. Laius was killed by robbers presumingly in a place where three roads meet. Oepidus recalls this place where he had killed a man and his servants years ago so he sends for the only witness who was a slave. The slave confirms the account.
  • My Oedipus, God help you! I can not bare the shame that have come back to haunt us!
  • Oepidus told Jocasta he received the same prophecy years ago in Corinth when he was told his parents were not his real parents. So he fled Corinth to escape the prophecy. On his journey, he met travelers at a crossroad where someone hit him and he killed them. Jocasta and Oedipus realized the truth. Jocasta ran home and hung herself. Oedipus finds her and cuts the noose. He rips the brooches from her clothes to gauge out his eyes so he would no longer see the honor in his life.
