Relationship with Janie: In her first two marriages, Janie succumbs to the abuse and oppression. She hits a turning point in the middle of the novel when she stands up for herself and takes control of her own life. She motivates herself by reaching for her goal of independence and freedom.

  • Strengths: cares for Janie´s well-being. A former slave who developed strength and perseverance. Weaknesses: lets her own dreams get in the way of what Janie truly wants to do. Awful marriage.Marriage: gives social protection, protects innocence and provides stability. Nanny is her grandmother who devotes her life to caring and protecting Janie. Tries to put her on a stable and safe path.

  • Strengths: financially stable, well known, respected.Weakness: apathetic, verbally abusive.Marriage: both partners should work in a marriage, marriage is a transaction for him.Relationship with Janie: treats her like a slave and didn't care about her feelings.

  • Strengths: hard-working, wealthy, handsome.Weaknesses: cruel, conceited, abuses power. Marriage: believes women should be silenced. Used for looks and status. Relationship with Janie: views Janie as an object and only marries her for the contribution of power she will give him. Dictates her and forces her to do as he says. Is only pleased with her when she follows rules.
  • Strengths: hard working, loving, independent, respectful. Weaknesses: fear of loosing what he has worked so hard for. (job and his relationship with Janie)Marriage: wants to find true love and balance with someone. If the person is right, everything will go well.Relationship with Janie: they find true love with each other and allows Janie to become who she was meant to be. Contributes to helping her finish her journey of self discovery.
  • At the beginning of the novel Janie is unsure with who she is and who she wants to become. She begins to embark on a journey of finding true love and seeking her true identity. During this journey Janie begins to realize the importance of freedom and independence and hopes to attain it. With this she wants a balance of love and a partner who treats her equally and with respect. Through the lessons she has learned from her past two marriages, she finds this love with TeaCake. She comes back to Eatonville a changed women, being proud and confident in who she is .and has become.
