- This scene represents and important scene, when the main character Dr. Grace finds out that he was forced on the mission by the organizer, rather than on his free will

- "No one in their right mind would make a ship that shape. No one on Earth would, anyway. This... this is an alien spacecraft. Made by aliens. humanity isn't alone in the universe.And I've just met our neighbors" (Weir 120).
- This scene is when Dr. Grace first "meets" who comes to be his best friend Rocky. Rocky is an alien from Eridani 40 that comes to the same star for a similar issue on his home planet, Astrophage is killing their home star

- "Im not going back. Im going to die here. My ship only had enough fuel for the trip here. I don't have enough to go home. I have tiny little probes that will return to earth with my findings. but I will stay here" (Weir 264).
- " I can give. I have extra. Can give that much and still have plenty for my return to Erid. You can have. I have much Astrophage. My ship more efficient than planned on trip here. You can have two million kilograms" (Weir 264).
- This is arguably one of the most important scenes of the book, Dr. Grace learns that his alien friend Rocky has enough spare fuel to make it home from what was a suicide mission
