- Reign of Terror
- A mob of mainly craftsmen and store owners searching for gunpowder and arms stormed the Bastille. They overwhelmed the guard and took control of the building; they hacked the prison commander and several guards to the death and then paraded the dead men’s heads on pikes around the streets. The fall of the Bastille became a great symbolic act of revolution for the French people.

- Parisian women revolted over the rising price of bread. They marched on Versailles carrying weapons and demanded that the National Assembly provide bread. Then they turned their anger on the king and queen, broke into the palace, killing some of the guards, and the women demanded that Louis and Marie Antoinette return to Paris.

- During this time, France was ruled by a group of men called the Committee of Public Safety, led by Robespierre. France was ruled by the Terror. The slightest hint of opposition to the revolutionary government could mean prison or even death: about 17,000 were executed, and about 10,000 died in prison or without trial. On July 27, 1794, he was removed from power, and the Reign of Terror was over; he was then executed the next day.

- Frustration with their leadership reached a fever pitch, and Napoleon staged a coup d’état, canceling the Directory and appointing himself France’s “first consul.” The event marked the end of the French Revolution and the beginning of the Napoleonic era. France would come to dominate much of continental Europe.
