- An African-American man and a elderly hispanic woman are waiting at a MARTA bus stop at a street corner. MARTA has been the target of racial inequity since its creation in 1965.

- Today, MARTA currently operates in 3 counties: Dekalb, Fulton, and Clayton. The rail service reaches Clayton only at the most northern point - Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The bus service is about as expansive as the rail line, but covers more stops to account for consumers in areas farther from rail stops.

- However, because of pushback and deep-rooted racism (Atlanta was a strongly segregated city before the Civil Rights Act), MARTA has faced challenges developing in areas that cater to African-American communities.

- Hey, the bus came! For us, this should be normal. The bus stops on time at a stop with a sidewalk and nearby crosswalk. However, 25% of stops do not have a connected sidewalk, and 58% of stops do not have a nearby crosswalk.

- For daily riders of the MARTA, these statistics are frightening... African-American citizens, the elderly, and the disabled are all put at disproportionate risk of getting in pedestrian related accidents. African-American citizens make up 74% of traffic fatalities in areas MARTA operates...

- I had to take an alternate route to the bus stop today, where is the crosswalk? Because of poor funding for MARTA in my community, there was no crosswalk infrastructure developed near the bus stop. I think I will have to cross the street myself.

- Accidents like the example pictured are real and do occur. However, there are solutions to this problem: Setting quotas for stops with benches and shelter can ensure safety while waiting. Crosswalks and sidewalks can also be developed. For the long term, dedicated bus lanes can be developed, reducing rider wait time, which has also been a consistent issue with MARTA ridership. Ideally, if policy is enacted, examples like this are preventable!
