- Charlie Gordon is a mentally disabled adult, who attends a specials needs school in New York. Charlie is involved in lab tests with an overwhelming eagerness to help people and is constantly being tested on his IQ which at the moment is 68. As a result of the tests, charlie is selected for a brain surgery that is supposed to triple his intelligence, this test has already worked on a mouse named algernon.
- Climax
- Charlie's surgery is a success, and every minute his intelligence is increasing. Charlie is starting to realize that people he thought were his friends were just using him or laughing at him not with him.
- Falling action
- Charlie leaves his job at the plastic company because the people don't look at him the samehis intelligence surpasses the doctors and he quits his job at the plastic company. Charlies friends don't understand what he is going through. Charlie feels more distant towards people, including the teacher.
- Resolution
- Charlie learns that his intelligence is declining. Charlie is at the conference with the doctors, about algernon, and he sees old videos of him and gets very upset. He starts calling out the doctors about their moral responsibility.
- Charlie ends his relationship with fay and goes back to the lab for research. Charlie goes to visit his mother and sister and learns he can not be mentally capable of taking care for his sister for much longer. Algernon dies.
- Charlie and alice have some romantic peaceful final weeks before he regresses. His final wish to alice before he is gone is that she put flowers on algernon's grave.
