- Jude is from a small, colorist town called Mallard. When she gets older she moves to California for college, "In the autumn of 1978, a dark girl blew into Los Angeles from a town that existed on no maps" (Bennett 91). Jude attends UCLA on a track scholarship. The sport is a great way for Jude to escape her reality of prejudice in Mallard. Although discrimination is present everywhere, it is toned down outside of her hometown.

- Reese is originally born a woman. He switches to a boy on the outside and mentally, but he needs surgery to transform physically, "Two hundred dollars. He would never save enough by himself" (Bennett 142). Jude gets another job that pays more to help her boyfriend. She understands that he is not able to afford it on his own. Jude is selfless and kind; she is willing to work more hours to make her significant other happy.

- Jude Kennedy
- Jude sees Stella and meets Kennedy at a retirement party that she is catering for. After that night, she becomes fascinated with their family history, "...And like that, Jude was fumbling after her through the lobby, past backstage, and into her dressing room" (Bennett 243). Jude is stuck with mixed emotions-- part of her wants to express the truth to Kennedy, and another part wants to keep quiet and not ruin anything. Jude begins working at the theater that Kennedy performs at. In order to gain more insight, Jude gets closer to Kennedy.
