A little after I turned 9 years old, I noticed my mom and dad could not buy food sometimes. Some nights, we didn’t even eat dinner. We are part of what is called the Third Estate, meaning that we are all peasants and working class. We also made up 98% of France’s population.
Honey, I can't afford this. The First and Second Estate aren't being taxed at all.
One night, I heard my mom and dad talking about taxes. I asked them what that was, and they said that the King was asking them for too much money, and that people who had more money than us didn’t have to pay any taxes!
Taxes: money that you have to pay to the government.
After this, we couldn’t pay for even more things. Lots of people were even hoarding bread and wheat.
She said that her father is the representative for the Third Estate, and that the wealthier people don’t treat the Third Estate very fairly. Mary said that the Third Estate has now declared itself as the National Assembly. The reason why they did this is because they were sick and tired of being treated unfairly.
A few months later, I was playing outside with my friend Mary and she told me about the Estates General.
