Is discrimination towards LGBTQ+ people still even around?
Yes.
Though it may seem as if society has made a lot of progress regarding homophobia: the discrimination or prejudice against gay people, and transphobia: the discrimination or prejudice against trans people, we still have a long way to go.
Though homophobia and transphobia may seem a thing of the past, LGBTQ+ individuals are still being bullied for their identity. While some find the oppression stops at home, many can’t find an escape.
46% of homeless LGBT youths ran away because of family rejection of their sexual orientation or gender identity while 43% were forced out by parents. LGBTQ+ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness, LGBTQ+ young people make up 40% of the young homeless population in the USA.
AND STAY OUT!
Some may say these statistics don’t mean anything because LGBTQ+ make up a large percentage of the population, but when LGBTQ+ youth make up only 7% of the population can this issue still be ignored and denied?
The best ways to prevent homophobia and transphobia are to educate others on the topic, why it shouldn’t be seen as wrong or disgusting and also what language is acceptable when it comes to discussing the topic. Other ways to support LGBTQ+ youth include donating to LGBTQ+ fundraisers and calling out others for their prejudiced behavior.
It’s hard for a minority to find their place in society if they’re the only one’s fighting for it, which is why it is important for straight cisgender people to help end the bullying and disgust that comes when people discuss the topic of being LGBTQ+
