- Hey, what’s that you’re eating?
- I've heard about that brand. Isn’t it a product of Unilever?
- Unilever? What’s that?
- Oh this? It's just some Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
- Unilever is a multinational consumer goods company that’s based in London. Some of their products are things you see every day, like Ben and Jerry's ice cream, Dove products, and even Hellmann's mayonnaise!
- Wow, that’s a lot of different products
- Well, without the industrial revolution, our economy would most likely still be agricultural based. The industrial revolution allowed mass production to start, and doing this caused the prices of goods to drop and improved wages.
- Yep! And many of these products couldn’t have been made without the industrial revolution to help?
- Industrial revolution? How did that help with these products
- Without the industrial revolution, none of these products would have been able to be manufactured as quickly as they are today. In fact, if the industrial revolution never happened, we would still be hand making everything.
- I never thought about that. didn’t the industrial revolution also cause more people to live in urban areas rather than rural areas?
- Yep! People had started to sell their farms and moved to urban areas to get factory jobs. These technological changes throughout the land made people realize that mass-producing things had a lot of pros, like the ability to save time and money. It became favored over hand making things.
- But weren’t the people who worked in factories in harsh conditions? How did they find that easier to bear than working on a farm?
- Both were hard work, but the factories had a better pay. And, nowadays, working conditions are much better.
- Now, there are laws and regulations on how workers are treated. For example, Unilever, they have an environment that respects honesty, integrity, openness, and the interests of its employees. This ensures that everyone is treated fairly.
- Wow, I’ve learned a lot from this conversation. I have to go now, but thanks for teaching me something new!
