Offred
Offred is a woman in her thirties, married to Luke (who was previously married to someone else) and had a daughter together. She was raised by her mother who was a feminist and tried to bring her up the same values as her. When the new regime started, she got caught trying to escape to Canada with her family and was forced into the role of being a handmaid due to her committing adultery. At some point in the life from before, she had become friends with Moira and would meet up with her at the Red Centre within the privacy of the bathrooms. As her role of a handmaid, Offred will often observe the objects and things happening around her, describing them in great detail. Anything to keep her inquiring mind busy while the commander does what he needs to do because of Gilead's customs. Offred submits to her role as a handmaid and declines helping the resistance for her own survival, thus conforming to the new lifestyle and staying within the boundaries of Gilead's customs and ideals. This is so that she can preserve her sense of self as a human being under the oppressive regime.
