Civil War

On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln of the was elected for president. This caused 11 southern states to seceded from the United states and create the Confederacy. This started the civil war.
On January 1, 1863 Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.  It stated that all slaves in confederate states would be free. It also allowed them to join the Union army.
Abraham Lincoln was part of the antislavery republican party. He was a very important figure in ending slavery in America.  He was assassinated on April 15th, 1865 when he was 56 years old.
Robert E.Lee, the general of the Confederacy surrendered to Grant, The general of the Union on April 9, 1865, in Appomattox Court House. He gave his remaining troops to the Union and this ended the civil war.
Robert E.Lee was the general of the confederacy. He was the most successful general in the South and was a very strong leader. He died at 63 years old.
After the civil war ended, Slavery was abolished and all slaves were free in America. This is because Abraham Lincoln proposed the 13th amendment on February 1 1865. It was then ratified on December 6, 1865. The Southern states also reunited with the North and the country started to gain peace..
