-  Hard Rock has split purple lips, welts above his yellow eyes, scars on his face, lumbed ears, and a scar that cuts across his temple and goes through his thick hair. 
- Conflict 
- Hard Rock is a very tough guy, he doesn't take s*** from anyone. Hard Rock was very hard to handle and was misbehaved. Hard Rock was put in the "hole" because he didn't care about getting in trouble. Hard Rock also "Smacked a captain with his dinner tray ". 
- Simile
- After Hard Rock got his lobotomies surgery he wasn't a mean person anymore. The surgery included a hole in his head to cut out part of his brain, and shot electricity. they brought Hard Rock back to the jail and then he was let free. Hard Rock was a whole different person after the surgery and he did nothing to anybody, just "grinned and looked silly".
- Imagery  
- Hard Rock had many conflicts with people in the jail, he had many conflicts with the guards as well. For example, " Yeah, remember when he smacked the captain with his dinner tray?"  Hard Rock didn't give a crap about anything before the lobotomies surgery. After his surgery he was completely different. 
- They all were waiting and watching for Hard Rock when he was turned loose. They were waiting to see if he really wasn't a "mean ni****" anymore after the lobotomies  surgery. They use simile in the passage when they say, "like a heard of sheep". 
- Imagery is used in the passage when they talk about Hard Rocks appearance. " Split purple lips, lumbed ears, welts above his yellow eyes, and one long scar that cut across his temple and plowed through a thick canopy of kinky hair". This is helping the reader imagine what he looked like. hard Rock was known to be a bad*** and this is what this is showing, that he doesn't care about anything.
