- The scene is set in fair Verona, Italy where two houses, the Montagues and the Capulets, are in a feud.
- ACT I - Scene III
- Two Capulet servants provoke two Montague servants which leads to a brawl. Prince Escalus then arrives to break up the fight. Benvolio is sent to find Romeo who is found moping over Rosaline, the love of his life, who just vowed to be a virgin.
- ACT I - Scene IV
- Capulet and Paris discuss the possibility of if and how marrying off Juliet would go. A party is organised later that day so Paris can attempt to win over Juliet. The servant sent to invite the guests can't read and Romeo reads the guest list for him and finds out Rosaline is attending. Benvolio convinces Romeo to go to the party so he can get over her.
- ACT I - Scene V
- Lady Capulet and the Nurse talk to Juliet about marriage and the possibility that Juliet could marry Paris. Juliet thinks marriage to be an honour and reassures her mother that she will look upon Paris as a potential suitor and husband.
- Romeo, Benvolio and Mercutio attempt to gatecrash the Capulet's party. Mercutio mocks Romeo while Romeo is concerned going to the party is a bad idea and will somehow lead to his death.
- Romeo sees Juliet from across the room and Rosaline vanishes from his mind. Both Romeo and Juliet are transfixed by each other and Romeo approaches Juliet. They talk shortly, kiss twice and fall in love in the blink of an eye.
