- Charlie Gordon is a 32 year old male with an intellectual disability and only an IQ of 68. He is in a special-ed class with Ms. Kinnian as his teacher. He is trying his best to become smarter, he learns about this operation from Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur that will triple his IQ. He also works at a plastic box factory to pay for his apartment.
- Climax
- After the operation happens there isn't too much noticable differences. He races against a lab mouse that has also undergone the operation named Algernon. Overtime he starts to learn faster and faster. He ends up getting fired from his job because his co-workers think he's getting to smart.
- Falling Action
- Go away! I don't want to see you
- His intellectual growth ends up becoming too much for Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss. He ends up becoming too smart and even makes fun of Dr. Nemur for not knowing things that he took his whole life to learn.
- Resolution
- Algernon starts to regress and is acting very abnormally. He ends up dying which was devestating for Charlie. He learns that as a result of the operation, the speed of your intellectual increase would also be the speed that they start to regress and eventually die. Charlie is starting to not understand what he was talking about and his regression is starting.
- Charlie realizes that he is getting less intelligent. He rejoins the plastic box company to pay for his apartment since he lost his last pay check from the lab. Ms. Kinnian tries to see Charlie but he is embarrassed about his current state and tells her to leave.
- Charlie goes to Ms. Kinnians class for one last time because he is back to his low mental state and forgot he isn't in her class anymore. He tells Ms. Kinnian that he is going to New York to live a new life and leaving his one here. He tells Ms. Kinnan to put flowers on Algernon's grave when he leaves. But it is expected that he will have the same fate as Algernon and die soon.
