Kase Johnson Fever 1793

Fever 1793 is a book about a girl named Mattie who went through Yellow Fever in 1793. The scene that stands out the most to me is when robbers break into the coffee house and grandfather dies. Mattie fell asleep in the coffee house front room dreaming of roast beef. Mattie and grandfather had just returned from Bush Hill. They were trying to survive on whatever they could find. This was hard work on Mattie because she had to clean up the coffee house and find food. She was hungry and tired. She woke up when she heard footsteps and talking. Robbers came through the open door. They take grandfather's chess pieces and sword. The tall robber almost cut Mattie. She screamed and ran away. They grabbed her. Grandfather comes down the steps and tried to shoot them. The tall robber attacks Grandfather and bangs his head on the ground. Mattie chases the robber away with a sword and Grandfather dies. This scene is important because it shows how desperate people are in Philadelphia and Mattie is alone.
