  • Mami is sitting on the edge of the bed with my journal cradled between her hands. when she looks at me, I feel blood rush to my cheeks. ( 300, Acevedo )
  • Mami is sitting on the edge of the bed with my journal cradled between her hands. when she looks at me, I feel blood rush to my cheeks. ( 300, Acevedo )
  • I found your book, how dare you write these devilish things about me and boys and the church?
  • shes lit the match. I tell her. that no one sees the words. that there's just my personal thoughts. that it helps for me to write them down. that they're private. that I'm sorry. ( 301,302 acevedo)
  • get a trash can Xiomara, I don't want ashes on my floor.
  • no please Mami don't! I swear no one has seen these poe--
  • NO Xiomara! its to late now..
  • One main idea that is shown in this panel is the power of language. Both Mami and Xiomara are battling for control of the situation and are talking over each other. this main idea is important here and in the entire book because the entire book is made out of poems. poems is a type of language that people can practice and use to share they're ideas and opinions. Mami is essentially trying to silence xio for 90% of the entire book until she has enough and does something she will never regret.

  • the smoking book falls on the floor. we both reach for it. my mother slaps me back hard onto my ass. And as she recites scripture words tumble out of my mouth too....
  • im where the X is marked, I arrived battle ready---
  • dios TE slave, Maria, llena Eres de gracia;
  • I am the indication, I sign myself across the line
  • el Senor es Contigo bemdita tu Eres entre todas las mujeres
  • the X I am is an armored dress I clothe my self in every morning
  • y bendito es El fruto de tu vientre, jesus
  • my name is hard to say and my hands are too I raise them here
  • santa Maria, Madre de dios, ruega por nosotros, pecadores, ahora y en la hora de nuestra muerte. amen (305-307 Acevedo)
  • to build a church of myself. this X was always an omen
  • Another main idea that this scene portrays is religion because we can see these two religions clashing into one another trying to gain the upper hand and the advantage. They both talk about protection but one is trying to run away into safe hands while the other is rebellious and building their own church . This is the first time that xio is sharing her own religion and finally defending herself with words and not her fists.

  • i stand up to my full height. and I'm glad I'm still wearing my coat and backpack, because I need to leave. I rush to the door, turn to see twin pulling my mother back. she has her arm raised: a machete ready to cut me down. and when I'm finally outside I breathe in-- I have nowhere to go and nothing left. twin begins texting me immediately. but I don't answer. X: Hey aman. I need to talk. can you chill? ( 313,314 Acevedo)
  • xiomara!
  • I need to get to aman.. now!
  • This moment for Xiomara is like when a flower is trying to survive during the harsh winter. Everything around it is cold and wanting to hurt it and all it can do is watch other plants and things die and perish, kinda like her notebook burning. Xiomara running away is like the flower running away from the cold like making an igloo out of the snow to trap heat for itself. Xiomara is using the resources around her to find or create a safe spot for herself. After this winter ends, the flower will bloom into a magnificent flower that will attract many butterflies and bees. These butterflies and bees are new friendships, opportunities, and more.
