  • The sandwich first enters the mouth, as seen below. When you sense the food coming into your mouth , your saliva glands begin producing saliva even before the meal enters your mouth. As you chew, your saliva combines with the sandwich to form a mushy lump of food known as bolus.
  • The bolus then goes down the oesophagus, a long, narrow tube. The muscular walls of the oesophagus squeeze the bolus down to the stomach.
  • Once in the stomach, hormones signal the stomach walls to release acid, which dissolves the bolus into a liquid known as chyme. Hormones also signal the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas to begin producing bile.
  • The sandwich then enters the small intestine. The liver transports bile to the gallbladder, which stores it until it is needed. The sandwich's molecules are absorbed by tiny projections called villi, while the residual fibre, water, and dead cells enter the big intestine.
  • The sandwich is next passed through the large intestine or colon. The majority of the fluid is drained from the colon along the intestinal walls. This results in a mushy mass known as stool.
  • The sandwich is placed in a small pouch by the big intestine and retained there until it exits the body by the anus. And now the journey through the digestive system, which lasts roughly 30-40 hours, comes to an end.
