One peaceful afternoon, Jem and Scout were walking down the road and passed by Mrs. Dubose's house...

... and suddenly, for some unexplainable reason, something snapped inside of Jem. In the text it says, "We had just come to her gate when Jem snatched my baton and ran flailing wildly up the steps into Mrs. Dubose's front yard, forgetting that she packed a pistol under her shawls, forgetting that if Mrs. Dubose missed, her girl Jessie probably wouldn't" (118).
Jem didn't stop until all of the flower heads were gone. He must have taken umbrage at Mrs. Dubose's philippic about Atticus earlier that day.

With all the flowers gone, Jem then decided to take the rest of his anger out on Scout. In the text it says, " I didn't shut up and he kicked me. I lost my balance and fell on my face. Jem picked me up roughly but looked like he was sorry" (118).
This scene shows how Jem was impulsive and latter regretted his decisions. This supports the theme that people often think before they act, which can lead to negative or unintended consequences.
