The Space Race was a cold war competition between the USSR and the U.S. It was a race to see which country could develop space technology the fastest.
U.S Lands A Man On The Moon
On October 4th, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik. This was the first satellite in the entire world. This gave them an early lead in the Space Race.
Why Was The Space Race Important?
The Soviet Union pulled ahead again by sending the first person to space. Yuri Gagarin completed a full orbit around Earth on April 12th 1961.
The U.S. scored a major win by landing the first man on the moon. On July 20th, 1969, the Apollo 11 crew touched down, and won the Space Race for the U.S.
The Space Race is important because it showed the world which country had better technology. Both the USSR and the U.S. realized that rocket research would be important for the military, after WWII.
