  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme : Fear and suspicion are destructive.
  • In The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is fear and suspicion are destructive. In the teleplay, the residents of Maple Street all turn on Les Goodman when his car started up by itself, and no one could explain how that happened. (pg 75.) This supports the theme because due to all the suspicion there was an argument that made the people fear more, and raised more suspicion. In the text, there is also a part where Charlie shot Pete Van Horn Due to suspicion, thinking he was an alien. (pg 82.) This evidence helps support the theme, because Charlie was so frightened that he ended shooting someone, when he could have been more calm and waited to really see who it was. Lastly, at the end of the text all the people of Maple Street started arguing, throwing things, and causing a big all because they suspected that everyone else was an alien or that they had caused the power to go out. (pg 85.) This shows that because of there raised suspicions and fear, they ended up in a big fight that wasn't necessary. In conclusion, one of the main themes in The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is fear and suspicion are destructive.
