- Exposition: The narrator introduces himself and the old man.
- The Old man
- Narrator
- The old man I lived with had never done me any wrong. I had loved the old man. Hearken. His evil eye, is what bothered me.
- Killing him was the only way to rid myself of his eye.
- Rising Action: The narrator watches the old man for seven long nights, but still he does not make the move.
- It is only a mouse crossing the floor.
- His suppositions are what kept me under cover each time.
- For 7 long nights I had watched him sleep. But I had to motive to kill since I did not see the eye.
- Climax: The old man is abducted by the narrator and gives his one final shriek. The narrator cuts up his body and hides the parts under the floor.
- The carefulness and sagacity of my actions are incredible!
- I'll hide his body under here. No one will find him.
- Falling Action: A neighbor had hear the scream so the police come to investigate. As the conversation is going on, the narrator begins to hear a faint thumping noise.
- I had told them the shriek was mine, but what is this noise? Surely they hear it too.
- Anything is more tolerable than their derision!
- Resolution: The narrator cannot take the agony and guilt so he tears up the boards to reveal the old man's body.
- My vehement tone was all fake. I admit the deed!
- Hear this! The thumping of the old man's heart!
