Henry's Performance Task: Solving Multi-Step Equations

Tekst Storyboardowy

  • Slajd: 1
  • Hey, son, what's your homework assignment you were asking me about?
  • Well, dad, I got this equation that I have no idea to solve for homework. It's 4x-4 = 2(-11+3x)+2. I didn't know letters were in math!
  • Oh, I know how to solve that. I can tell you how! Let's go to our chill room to discuss this.
  • Slajd: 2
  • So, first, you need to know that the x is a variable and makes the number in front of it a coefficient. So, let's forget about the x for now and solve it normally, without adding or subtracting coefficients with constants. So, we can distribute the 2 to -11 and 3x to get -18+6x. Then, add the rest of the equation to get 4x-4=-22+6x+2. Next, we combine like terms, which are the numbers both with or without an x. On the right side, we can add -22 and 2, which becomes -20, so our new equation is 4x-4=-20+6x. Then, we add 20 on both sides to get rid of the -20 on the right side of the equation to get 4x+16=6x because -4+20 is 16 and you keep everything else the same. Then, you subtract 4x on both sides to get rid of the 4x just like the -20 on the last step to get 18=2x. Finally, you divide both sides by 2 to isolate x since we want to find what the answer is. Since we are multiplying x by 2, we need to do the opposite to get x on its own, which is dividing by 2. So, the answer to the equation is x = 8 because 16 divided by 2 is 8!
  • I get it now!

  • I'm gonna ace this homework!
  • Good luck, son.
