- James is a high school student whose 16th birthday was just last month. His dream of getting his driver's license can finally come true. The journey may take a while, but for now he has to focus on achieving his Learner's License.

- The Learner's License (or just L) is simple to obtain with enough preparation. James must pass the L's Knowledge Test, an exam that ensures he understands how to express safe driving behaviours while understanding how the roads operate with drivers on them. All the information he needs to know can be found on ICBC's Learn To Drive Smart website.

- ICBC Knowledge Test
- After studying, James completes practice tests with a mark of 100% before eventually taking the actual exam. He is able to take the test either online or in-person at an ICBC driver licensing office. If your like James and choose the latter, you'll need to bring in an accepted ID, a legal guardian consent form and a $15 fee for the test.

- James didn't score perfectly, but luckily for him you only have to score 40 out of the 50 questions correctly, which gives him his Learner's License! As a learner, he is now allowed to drive with a qualified supervisor while following certain restrictions. These include restricted driving hours, no electronic devices and limited passengers.

- One Year Later...
- James has been driving as a learner for more than 12 months, allowing him to be eligible to move onto the next stage of being a driver, obtaining the Novice (N) License. Similarly to his L, James must pass a test in order to gain his N. However, he is instead doing a road test, which will assess your actual driving skills rather than knowledge.

- After practicing many of his skills, James took the Class 7 Road Test, which takes about 35 minutes. With his driver examiner next to him, he goes on a designated route that has him perform various driving skills in a controlled manner. Afterwards, James is given a paper copy of his test results and a Skills Explainer. The Skills Explainer lists explicitly all the driving skills you need to know, and the examiner may circle skills that you could use improvement on.

- Now that he's passed the Class 7 Road Test, James now has his N License! He is now able to drive without needing a supervisor, yet still has all the other restrictions he had before. He is very close to receiving his full license, however still has to wait 24 months before he can move on from his N.

- James has spent a whole two years driving safely without a supervisor and now can take his Class 5 Road Test. Although very similar to the Class 7 Test, the environment and skills you are tested on are more challenging. It will require him to show his examiner that he has both excellent vehicle control and safety.

- The Class 7 Road Test was a success for James, which means after three years he finally has his full driver's license! To celebrate, his dad bought him a brand new car for his own! Although it takes some time, James's journey shows that youth can be safe on the road.
