Dick and Perry after committing what Dick claims to be the perfect crime are on the run and are eating at a diner. Perry does not agree, in fact he is paranoid. After constantly reading and rereading the newspaper about the crime Dick tries to calm Perry's nerves by telling him that "Look, If those cowboys could have made the slightest connection, wed have heard the sound of hooves a hundred miles off". This leads to a disagreement that end with Perry talking about major events in his life.
"When he was seven years old , a hated, hating half-breed child living in a California orphanage run by nuns-shrouded disciplinarians who whipped him for wetting his bed" (Capote 93)." The discussion in the diner end up with Perry going on a long winded rant about his childhood and how in a recurring dream a parrot would come and kill the nuns that tortured him in his youth.
After Perry finishes his rant Dick seems uninterested and makes a joke about how he is "normal" and only ever dreamed of chickens. This shows that Perry believes that his story is deserving of everyone's attention and seems offended that Dick does not seem to really care.
