  • Provincialism
  • "'Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don’t pretend to understand...'"
  • Coming-of-Age
  • Perception vs. Reality
  • "'Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don’t pretend to understand...'"(Lee 117)This quote shows that the town is very much stuck in the past, especially when it comes to racism.
  • Provincialism
  • The scene where Scout fights Francis is a great example of coming-of-age. She is only 6 or 7 years old but is so ready to fight for her father's honor, even though he is a grown man."A nigger-lover. I ain’t very sure what it means, but the way Francis said it—tell you one thing right now, Uncle Jack, I’ll be-I swear before God if I’ll sit there and let him say somethin’ about Atticus.” (Lee 114)
  • Coming-of-Age
  • “Scout’s a cow—ward!”
  • This scene was an excellent example of perception vs. reality because it changed the way we saw Atticus Finch. For much of the book, we saw him as the nice, kind father, but this was like uncovering he had a tragic backstory. "Forgot to tell you the other day that besides playing the Jew’s Harp, Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time.”(Lee 129)
  • Perception vs. Reality
  • This is a happier example of provincialism. The kids had never seen snow before because of where they live, and so this was a new and fun experience.'“The world’s endin’, Atticus! Please do something-!” I dragged him to the window and pointed." (Lee 86)
  • Another good coming-of-age moment is when Scout decides not to fight. Opposite the example about this, it is still important because Atticus is teaching her to pick her battles.'“Scout’s a cow—ward!”'(Lee 102)
  • The scene where Boo Radley puts the blanket on Scout and Jem's shoulders is a very good perception vs. reality because we think of him as an ominous presence, but he just doesn't really like people.'“Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn’t know it when he put the blanket around you.”' (Lee 96)
