As he slept, Winston dreamed of his mother and sister and the way life was before Big Brother and the Party took over. He could not remember what happened to them, but he knew he had something to do with their disappearance. One day, they were just gone from his life.
"Arms bending and stretching! Take your time by me. One, two, three, four! One, two, three, four! Come on comrades, put a little life into it!"
The pain of the coughing fit had not yet driven the thought of his mother and his life before the party out of his head. Everything had been different then.

Suddenly, Winston was awakened by the ear-splitting whistle of the telescreen. The required physical jerks would begin in 3 minutes.
"Smith! Screamed the shrewish voice from the telescreen. "6079 Smith W.! Yes, you! Bend lower, please! You can do better than that! You're not trying! Lower, please!"
At that moment, a sudden hot sweat come over Winston. He tried to control the expression on his face. He could not show dismay.

Winston stood, and the next moment he was doubled over with a violent coughing fit which nearly always attacked him shortly after waking.
"That's better comrade. Now stand at ease, and everyone watch me."
With a violent lunge, Winston succeeded in touching his toes with knees unbent for the first time in years.
