- WOW! Look mom! It's a Burmese Python!
- A Burmese Python? I've never heard of it. Could you tell me more about it?
- Of Course! The Burmese Python is originally from Southeast Asia. This species is something called an Invasive Species.
- The Burmese Python was first introduced in the U.S in the 1970's. The purpose of them coming here was that they were originally wanted as exotic pets.
- What brought it here, you ask?
- One peaceful day in 1979, some irresponsible pet owners let their Burmese Python free. of course this led to overpopulation. This all took place in Everglades National Park, Florida
- The Burmese Python is one of the largest species of snakes. These Pythons are so succesful in their new environment because they eat a wide variety of mammals. This helps the snakes ability to be a generalist predator.
- The Burmese Pythons only have a few natural predators, such as the Alligator, Black Bear, and Cougar.
- Another way the Burmese Python is affecting it's environment is the economy. By killing protected species of wildlife known to draw tourism, those companies are going bankrupt.
- This species is affecting many things.
- The Python competes with many other species for food. Severe mammal declines in Florida are likely caused be this snake.
- As of today, a program has been started. It's name is "Python Patrol". Regular citizens are taught to call in snake sightings and wildlife officials are trained to capture the snakes.
