  • This frame depicts Ada who is the main character of the book and is living in a 2 room flat with her brother Jamie and their abusive mother during the height of WWII in London, England. Ada's mom does not allow her to go to school because of her clubfoot which she refused to pay for as a baby. This frame shows Ada sitting in a chair looking out the window. This is important because it shows where Ada spends most of her time.

  • This frame shows Ada learning to walk in her two-room flat. This is important because she had to learn to walk to escape her bad situation with her mom.

  • This frame shows Ada and Jamie eating bread and sugar. This was important because it was the only food their abusive mother could afford and the only food they could eat.

  • This frame depicts Ada and Jamie boarding a train to the countryside of Kent, England to escape the bombing of London. This is important because it is the start of a new lifestyle and a drastic change. They also took with them all of the bread and sugar their mom had.

  • This frame shows Ada and Jamie being taken to a woman named Susan's house by the leader of the women's volunteer service. Susan reluctantly agreed to take them in as part of the evacuations to Kent. This was important because it was the first time they were ever shown affection and a new chapter in their life.

  • This frame depicts Ada meeting a horse named Butter for the first time who belonged to Susan's dead partner. This is important because it shows their first interaction which later becomes a great friendship. This also becomes where Ada spends most of her free time. (Riding Butter is her favorite hobby.)

  • This scene shows Jamie holding a cat Bovril which he found in Kent. Bovril was important because he allowed Jamie to stop wetting the bed every night and is a major part of his life. Bovril got his name from a drink they had to consume every night.
