- It didn’t take very long to solve this problem though. This was because Douglass, as the smartest one in the group, knew how to read and write. So Douglass used this to his advantage and wrote “holiday passes” for the group. This pass would allow them to get by the police without having problems. Since Douglass was the smartest of the group, it would make it easier to create ideas to escape.
- The day of the escape, two police officers came to the plantation that Douglass Worked at, to investigate rumors of runaway attempt. “Have any of you ever thought of running away from slavery?” asked one officer. “No.” said Douglass. “Have you ever wanted to learn to read or write?” asked the other. “No.” Douglass lied. The two officers kept asking questions like these to Henry,John and Douglass, until they found them guilty of trying to escape and sent them to jail.
- A few weeks of being in jail had gone by, when one day Douglass is told he has been released by his master. Douglass thought that this was terrible and he would receive a massive punishment. This never happened though, instead, Mr. Auld sent Douglass to his relative to learn a skill. Douglass now had hope because of this. He believed that if he can escape prison, he can escape slavery, and maybe even end it.
